It's time for the annual Teddy Awards, and in addition to Sue Ann for her episode on fowl, all the major players in the newsroom, including Lou, Mary, Ted and Murray have been nominated for a special for which Lou feels they all are deservedly nominated and rightfully should win. The only doubter is perennial loser Murray, who has never won a Teddy. Murray, embarrassed by always having to put on a happy face while someone else's name is called in his category, is planning on not even attending this year's ceremony. But Lou finds out from an inside source that Murray is going to win this year. An excited Lou confides in Mary, but doesn't want to tell Murray, but also doesn't want Murray not to attend if he's a shoo-in to win. Meanwhile, Mary has been asked to perform the thankless job of entertainment coordinator for the event. WJM's nominees for this year's edition of the Teddy Awards are Ted, Murray (nominated for the first time) and Sue Ann. Sue Ann feels like she will be breaking Lou's heart by telling him that she will be going to the awards' ceremony with another man, Doug Kellum, a Canadian outdoorsman who appeared on her show where she was teaching how to cook without a kitchen. Sue Ann later admits to Mary that she has fallen in love with Doug, and by the way he has been acting he may have fallen in love with her. That's why Mary is so repulsed when Doug makes a play for her once Sue Ann is out of the room. Mary, not knowing what else to do, decides to unburden herself to Lou. But once Sue Ann makes an important announcement concerning herself and Doug at the awards' ceremony just before the winner of her category is going to be announced, Mary has no choice but to tell Sue Ann what Doug did. It's the time of the year for the Teddy Awards again. Ted, as usual, is stepping up his campaign to woo the Teddy Awards nominating committee and voters with his week long supposed deeds of do-gooding. Just before the nominations are to be announced, Lou hears through the grapevine that Ted didn't even get nominated this year. Lou wants Ted to hear the news from a friend rather than when the nominations are officially announced. Lou didn't however hear about who is being bestowed the Albert Mason Award, an award he despises both for its origins - Albert Mason being a crook who only originated the award as a tax write-off - and the fact that it is given to over-the-hill newspeople who have nothing left in their news careers. What ends up being worse for Lou than telling Ted he wasn't nominated is later learning himself that he is this year's Albert Mason Award winner. His plan to win is to overexpose himself - which includes hiring Rhoda to come up with a marketing campaign - with all the extra public appearances making him look like a humanitarian, however inappropriate or insincere his sentiments are. Everyone is therefore looking forward to seeing Ted lose even more this year. Miraculously, Ted wins. He wants to capture everything about the historic night to be able to remember it forever. However, by the next day, Ted wonders why his world is no different than it was before he won the award. As usual, Lou orders two tickets to the Broadcasters Man of the Year awards banquet, but unlike previous years, he has no wife to accompany him, which makes Mary and Murray curious as to who his date - the first since his separation - will be. Lou has no date, with the order of two tickets being force of habit. So he decides to ask Edie - who has reverted to using her maiden name of McKenzie - which results in the awkward situation of her having to tell him that she's already got a date for the banquet. Lou figures two can play that game. So he makes Mary find a date for him. The person she finds is Martha Dudley, a friend of Rhoda's who she's never met. Mrs. Dudley doesn't end up being quite what Mary and/or Lou expect, which will make for an interesting evening, not only on the date itself, but how it will appear to Edie. Written by Huggo
